Shrek Hat [November 07, 2009 | 10:57 PM]

knitting

[haakstad]
[ mood | pleased ]

I have a friend who will dress her son up in ridiculous hats, so it is very fun to knit for him.

I made him the baby chicken hat ) last year.

I decided on the Shrek hat ) this year.

I wanted to knit it top-down so I followed the thorpe pattern until I was happy with the length and did some ribbing along the bottom.

The original idea for the pattern came from the ogre my ogre pattern on Ravelry.

I can't crochet very well, so I made up my own knit pattern for the horns/ears. To make them, I picked up 8 stitches in a square (like the outside squares of a tic tac toe board), and knit i-cord for awhile. Then I did a row of k1, kfb in the round. Next row was kfb, k2. Then I just knit for a few more rows and let the natural curl of the stockinette work for me. I tacked the rolled edges in place with the yarn tails before weaving them in.

This was made from Mission Falls 1824 Wool which is superwash. I used US size 5 needles (I'm a very loose knitter). I put it through the washer and dryer to make sure the little ears still stood up. If I were to do it again, I would knit the horns on smaller needles as they did droop a bit after the wash. If this were for an adult I might have woven pipecleaners in.

Cut it all off? [November 07, 2009 | 10:08 PM]

Hey so I'll keep this short and sweet. I'm looking to cut my hair, I'm not a person who styles their hair very much--I just straighten out my side bangs and then let the rest curl. I love having curly/wavy hair and would say my 'signature style' would be a natural-messy style. I rarely put up my hair in a pony tail. I also find that my hair matts up at the back of my neck creating this one huge dread. Its pretty unsightly.

Heres a picture of me under the cut

Alright so I've had the layered side bang thing for over a year and I want something really different. I am emotionally attached to the length and have never dyed it in my life. My hair also happens to be crazy thick, which is why layers are a life saver. I want something unique and edgy I suppose is what I'm looking for. Bring on the layers, bangs, and pictures.here  )

Pattern Help [November 07, 2009 | 07:08 PM]

[doerofnone]
I'm starting my first cable project, the Star Crossed Slouchy Beret, and I'm confused about the way the pattern is written: http://www.ravelry.com/download/20188/free

This part is confusing:

Change to a US Size 11 circular, and work cable pattern as follows:

Rounds 1-4, 6-10 and 12: Knit around
Round 5: *Slip 3 sts to CN, hold to back, K3, K3 from CN, K3 Repeat from * to end.
Round 11: *K3, Slip 3 sts to CN, hold to front, K3, K3 from CN Repeat from * to end.

Work rows 1-12 of the cable pattern one
time (as written above).

I can't figure out if I'm supposed to work 1-12 once or twice. I see that a lot of people in the Ravelry comments have the same problem, but there are no answers. Anyone have any ideas?

 Best moment of my day.

My DTO was taking and order and all of a sudden I heard some outbursts from the people near the monitor for the drive thru.  After the interaction was over, I went to see what had happened.  The girl had been in the passenger seat, leaning over to say her order. Apparently her shirt was rather low cut and she was practically hanging out of it. As if that wasn't absurd enough, the guy driving the car then started GROPING HER while she was talking.

Major kudos to my DTO for keeping it together. He also wins for best possible comment in the situation.

Me: I kind of want to tell them we have a camera. Like "um, we can see you, dude."

Him: Or: "You want me to use that milk to make your latte?"

Everyone on the floor burst into laughter at the exact same moment, and thank GOD the DT window was closed. Oh dear... what a stupid day.

BUZZ-CUT HAIR ON GIRLS... [November 07, 2009 | 07:33 PM]

[natane]
i really, really, really want to buzz my hair. about 1/4 inch.

girls who have done this:
what was it like, other than your head being colder?
how long did it take to grow out to a pixie-ish length?
was it annoying to deal with while growing out, as in keeping it looking sorta neat?
my natural color is pretty flat - did you dye it? was it hard to keep dyed?
how did others react?
do you regret it, or was it enjoyable?

anyone:
pictures? comments? advice?

my main worry is that my ears might look funny :(

Okay. So. I am finally facing the consequences of dying my hair too much. And it sucks.

I started dying my whole head about 3 years ago, a few times a month.
It's taken quite the toll and now I'm starting to notice the damage.

I feel like I'm losing my hair. It has gotten so thin I'm terrified I'm going to go bald.

Thick hair, come back to meeee.
(i'm sorry this was so long)
thanks in advance!

As it starts to get colder I feel the need to start Christmas gifts. My dad always wants an "stylin' lid" every year with a fold up brim, and I've finally got the perfect pattern down so I thought I'd share.

Honestly, I don't know why I let these things surprise me anymore (let's blame it on all the sleep I've been not getting lately in this case).

BARISTA: Hi! What can I get for you today? *smiles*
CUSTOMER: What's your bold today?
BARISTA: Today our Bold Pick of the Day is Thanksgiving Blend, which is really g---
CUSTOMER: [interrupting] Is it bold?
BARISTA: Yes, ma'am!
CUSTOMER: Is that a new thing?
BARISTA: Well, we have it every year, but this year we've only been offering it since the beginning of this week, so I guess it's fairly new.
CUSTOMER: [long, awkward pause] Okay, I suppose I'll try it.
BARISTA: Sure thing!

No, it's not actually bold. I just gave it as an answer when you asked what our bold was today TO CONFUSE YOU, BECAUSE I'M MEAN LIKE THAT.

Mainly for the baristas who work in licensed/ 'we proudly brew' stores...
Do you brew Terraza for your iced coffee, and brew it at double strength?
It seems that every time I go to a Tarbux or other non-corporate 'bux my iced coffee is super weak, and also doesnt have the same taste as the Terraza.
Not really complaining, but just curious.

Side note: saw a button on our POS yesterday for Marble Loaf...I havent seen it in ages!! Is marble loaf coming back?!

Bordering a Blanket [November 07, 2009 | 12:28 PM]

knitting

[crayolaab]
I have been working on a blanket project and have reached the final step - adding a border.

The blanket is 5ft x 6ft, so the total perimeter is 22 feet. I believe I have read in the past that you need 3x as much yarn to knit across a length. So a 22 foot border requires 66 feet of yarn for one row. 66 feet = 22 yards. So, if I want to do 6 rows of border, I need 132 yards of yarn.

Is that reasonable/logical? Does that make sense to anyone else? Am I off in my thinking?

I ask because I would LIKE to do a garter stitch border, but I only have 170 yards of yarn, and I feel like garter stitch needs at least 3 ridges (6 rows) to look good as a border. If I won't have enough for that, I'll have to do seed stitch (as much as I don't want to do 22 feet x however many rows of seed stitch, ugh).

Thanks!
